What makes palm tree pruning a difficult task?

Sunday, November 21st, 2010
  • The trunk is an extension of its tissue and excessive trimming can cause irreversible damage
  • Roots are not deep but grow in a rootball and are extremely sensitive
  • Ideal number of leaves is specific to each tree and reducing them affects their food production and intake
  • Removing or cutting healthy leaves weakens the tree leaving it vulnerable to wind, disease and pests
  • Decayed or broken leaves must be careful removed to prevent trunk damage
  • Production of seeds and fruit reduces strength and must be dealt with properly
  • Vibrant growth requires comprehensive tree care including tree fertilization and trimming

Holiday Outdoor Tree Safety – Tree Lighting Setup is Critically Important

Sunday, November 14th, 2010

With the holidays around the corner you’re probably getting ready to light up and show off your heritage and ornamental trees. Even on commercial and business properties, it’s not uncommon to hear of accidents amidst all the festivities. Falls and fire cause serious injuries as well as property damage. A tree on your premises can be a fire hazard if not guarded against. Protect yourself, your employees and visitors, your loved ones and your trees.

Here are some important points to keep in mind:

  • Make sure the lights are appropriate for outdoor use.
  • Never connect more than the manufacturer’s recommended number together.
  • Check each set of lights for damaged sockets, loose connections and frayed wires.
  • Test the lighting to see that it is working properly before you put it on a tree.
  • Fasten lights securely to trees.
  • Use grounded outlets (ground fault circuit interrupters are easily available and can be installed by a qualified electrician) and proper wiring.
  • Ensure outlets are above water level (in case it rains) as well as away from sprinklers.
  • Unclog drains and gutters, clean walkways and door passageways to prevent water logging and electrical fires.
  • Beware of cheap, counterfeit products.
  • Turn off outdoor light connections before closing up for the night
  • Consider hiring a professional external holiday decorator (to do take-down too!)

A professional landscape management company has the experience and knowledge to decorate your Northern California property and trees safely. It’s a small price to pay to have a safe and happy holiday season.

Planting tips near mature trees

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

Heritage and ornamental trees like the California native oak and palm trees are sensitive to any change in their immediate surroundings. Disturbing the grade around the roots affects growth and can kill them. This is true not only of young saplings but mature trees as well. So you want to be absolutely sure that the plants around them are compatible and at the prescribed distance.

Here are some helpful pointers to avoid unnecessary damage and disappointment:

  • Steer clear of the drip line (an imaginary line under outermost tips of the branches that forms a circle around the tree)
  • Plant away from tree root zone (approximately 1.5 times the area from the trunk to the drip line) to avoid damaging or disturbing roots
  • Palm trees don’t have deep roots and derive their nourishment from the top soil so ensure proper drainage and leave the area around free
  • Don’t irrigate, plant or disturb the area around the trunk (6 feet in the case of California native oaks )
  • Ensure the plants around are compatible in their water requirements (no summer watering plants like exotic grasses, ivy, azaleas, rhododendrons, etc. around oaks)
  • If you’re not sure which plants are appropriate, ask an arborist or landscape professional
  • Properly installed wood chips, gravel, pebbles, etc. help protect mature tree roots

Trees not only dress up the landscape but help preserve the environment. Protect your trees from unnecessary damage.  Get an established landscape management company to design, install and maintain your garden and mature trees in California.

Save the Shade, Transplant a Tree

Friday, October 15th, 2010

A tree transplanting service takes away the stress and hassle of relocating trees on your property. Don’t Cut Trees – Transplant Them!

Very often developers clear out trees that stand in the way of construction or property expansion. A smarter move is to transplant them to a better suited location where they will not obstruct the proposed development. Tree Transplanting is an environmentally friendly method of dealing with trees that are not ideally located.

Tree transplanting is also done for trees grown in nurseries from where they have to be moved to the site. Flora Terra offers transplanting services for nursery grown trees using suitable mechanical tree spades. Where required, we can excavate and place a large tree by crane to a new location.

Our clients in all areas of San Jose, San Francisco, Palo Alto, Livermore Valley, Walnut Creek, and the Napa region trust the skills of our tree transplanting team. Discover for yourself the peace of mind you’ll have knowing that your trees will be planted, transplanted safely and correctly.  Give us a call today to discuss your needs.

Tree Pest Management

Tuesday, October 5th, 2010

Pests can cause considerable and sometime fatal damage to trees, shrubs and other plants in a landscape.   These pests might include bugs and fungi, as well as squirrels, birds, pets, and even larger animals like bears.

What is Tree Pest management?

Tree Pest management involves:

  • Correct diagnosis of plant health problems by a careful examination of plant parts like the roots, trunk, branches and leaves.
  • Identification of problem pests which may be either insects such as chewing insects, boring insects and sucking insects or animal pests like mice, gophers, groundhogs, wild rabbits and moles.
  • Deciding on the treatment method used for a particular insect or disease problem depending on the species involved, the extent of the problem, and a variety of other factors specific to the situation and local regulations.

At Flora Terra, we use ISA approved pest management practices like spraying with chemical and organic pesticides, pruning, and fumigation of animals’ burrows. Systemic and comprehensive pest management practices ensure that the pests do not return to damage your trees.

Call us today at 800-455-0304 to schedule an appointment and discuss the tree pest management requirements for the trees on your property.

Large Tree Care

Friday, October 1st, 2010

Whether it’s planting, transplanting or relocating an existing tree on your property, large tree care requires the skills of a trained professional.

What does Large Tree Care Involve?

Large Tree Care encompasses the following aspects:

  • Regular Tree inspection to detect any change in the tree’s health before the problem becomes too serious. During the inspection, arborists examine four characteristics of tree vigor: new leaves or buds, leaf size, twig growth, and crown die back.
  • Mulching to provide trees with a stable root environment that is cooler and contains more moisture than the surrounding soil.
  • Fertilization to add nutrients to the soil and to maintain soil conditions, especially pH and organic matter content.
  • Pruning or trimming should be done regularly to control tree shape and keep branches from harming surrounding structures or people. Pruning also directs the growth pattern of the tree.
  • Tree Removal of dead, diseased and hazardous trees.
  • Pest and Disease Control to protect your trees from all kinds of infections, insect damage and pests.

Large trees are an investment for your landscaping and are a source of shade and enjoyment.  Proper care is important.  Contact FloraTerra Landscape Management to assess and protect your Bay Area large trees.

Tree and Fire Hazard Awareness

Thursday, September 16th, 2010

As a commercial property owner or developer, ignoring tree hazards or a fire hazard caused by trees is never an option. Trees are an integral part of your landscaping environment, but we cannot forget the hazards associated with them. Autumn is a good time to identify any hazard trees on your property. Winter can bring storms that will render potentially hazardous trees dangerous, or cause them to fail.

Leaning, lopsided trees may pose a hazard especially if the lean is more than 15 degrees from vertical. Trees that have grown leaning are not as hazardous as trees that were originally straight, but later developed a lean due to wind or root damage.

Large decay pockets and decay where branches meet the trunk can also indicate serious structural problems. Mushrooms or conks growing on or at the base of a tree are signs of decay-causing fungus.

Other tree hazards to look out for are weakly attached branches and deadwood. Trees with splits, cracks, and/or several branches arising from the same point on the trunk may also present problems as do dead branches, or deadwood which eventually fall. Branches thicker than two inches can cause serious damage when they fall. Dead branches which are broken but still hanging from the tree are especially dangerous.

These dead branches can also become a fire hazard during a storm. A grass fire can easily catch on and grow from dead and dry branches still attached to live trees.

A professional landscaping and arborist company can help you identify these tree hazards and fire hazards, and take care of them for you – for a better landscape appearance and safer living and working environment.

Deep root tree and shrub feeding

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Spring is the right time to plan deep root tree and shrub feeding for healthy plants through the year.

  •  Identifying the right solution: Compacting soil, depleting nutrients, harsh weather, pests and ice-melting agents affect roots and impede growth of trees and shrubs.  If you are unsure, consult a certified arborist who is skilled at identifying result-oriented solutions that will significantly improve your trees and shrubs’ appearance and growth.
  •  Effective treatments: Treatments are as varied as tree and shrub types – especially in the areas we serve in San Jose, San Francisco, Livermore Valley, Walnut Creek and the Napa region. Properly treated trees and plants recover from winter’s effects quickly because experienced tree technicians know exactly what is required and are meticulous in their deep root tree and shrub feeding, using just the right amounts of water, fertilizer and nutrients based on your trees, soil type, rain levels, sun, and wind exposure.
  • Regular maintenance: Winter and spring deep root tree and shrub feeding is an important tool because roots don’t stop growing and require more attention through changing weather patterns. A proper maintenance service plan regularly monitors tree and shrub growth and modifies treatments to meet changing conditions and needs.

Regular and planned deep root tree and shrub feeding promotes a healthy and beautiful landscape.  Now is the right time for deep root tree and shrub feeding in California.

Landscape maintenance  reqires more than just caring for your lawn.  Don’t neglect your expensive trees and shrubs.
